Illustration Friday - Rain

"Monsoon" - Modified 2006

Ok...this is my cheater picture. This is a painting I did in 2000, pulled into Photoshop, added a background, etc. The picture I painted today for this challenge is below.

Lesson learned...you get what you pay for when buying watercolor paper. Recently I bought a very small (4x6) watercolor tablet from a fine art store. It was made by 'Canson'. I haven't used watercolor paper much...mostly, I work on bristol board. Anyway, I quickly ran out, and was enjoying it...so I went to the local drug store, and bought a pad of "Academie" watercolor paper and started this project on it (below).

It was like painting on a Bounty paper towel! Don't get me wrong...I think Bounty makes a damn good paper towel...but they don't try to sell it to paint on!! (The finished one was done on bristol board.)

both pieces are exquisite. I love the colours and movement/pose of the woman, and the texture and i-dot for rain. yes I have learned the hard way about buying good materials as well. It's amazing what a difference it can make to your final piece. (proving once and for all that it is not always a bad artist who blames his tools!)

i like the first rain best too and monsoon is really nice! it could have worked for 'dance' too, beautiful!

I never would have thought to have monsoon woman's feet "outside" of the background. It MAKES the piece, in my opinion. I like both "rains"... but have experienced similar surprises and disappointments when a paper doesn't do what I assume it will do.

they are both quite beautiful and i definitely agree about the paper issue. i normally use bristol board, but if i'm feeling froggy enough to use watercolor paper, i always use the high quality stuffs :)

Wonderful pieces! You're right ~ paper makes all the difference. I've gotten spoiled by Arches watercolor blocks. A little pricier, but worth it!
